Have you asked yourself if SLPs have a role in reading development? Join this session to examine the research-based areas for reading instruction and make connections to the specific language skills that help to build those areas of reading. The five aspects of Reading First as they relate to SLPs will be the focus of this session as well as related strategies, activities, digital tools and online resources.

Following the course, participants will be able to:

  1. name the areas of the presented reading components necessary for literacy
  2. make direct connections between the reading components and speech language skills
  3. name links to classroom expectations and success  
  4. name digital tools and resources
About Sarah: Sarah James is an experienced speech-language pathologist, seminar leader and consultant. Working in urban, suburban and rural public schools, Sarah’s area of specialty is the relationship between speech-language skills and academic development and how cutting-edge technology can enhance speech-language programs. She has wide-ranging experience helping SLPs make connections between communication skills, classroom expectations, curriculum targets, and state standards.

Sarah has been called on as a consultant for school districts around the country where she has offered speech-language pathologists practical and effective strategies for therapy. Sarah has served as president of her state’s speech-language hearing association and in 2010 they awarded her the 
Honors of the Association

Course Timeline:

15 minutes: introduction 

15 minutes: overview of the areas of the presented reading components necessary for literacy

15 minutes: overview and application of phonemic awareness and phonics

15 minutes: overview and application of comprehension and vocabulary

15 minutes: overview and application of voice and presentation

15 minutes: review and additional digital tools and online resources
