Course Preview:

This seminar presents material on the process of improving intelligibility in children with severe apraxia and dysarthria, and other causes of severe expressive speech disorder. Pam Marshalla discusses practical ways to facilitate intelligibility through the development of a vowels, diphthongs, prosody, oral-nasal resonance, consonants, and phonological processes common in children with motor speech disorders. Lecture and small group activities will be used during this very practical presentation. Material bases on the Evidence-Based Practice philosophy.

Objective

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Use techniques to facilitate vowels and diphthongs.
  • Discover methods to encourage development of syllables and syllable sequences.
  • Discuss methods to facilitate improved prosody for improved intelligibility.
  • Discuss methods to facilitate improved resonance for improved intelligibility
  • Discuss methods of facilitating voiceless-ness, stridency, and final consonants.
  • Understand the role of jaw mobility and stability in speech development.
  • Learn basic methods to facilitate tongue mobility.
  • Learn basic methods to establish place of articulation.

Pam Marshalla, MA CCC-SLP was a practicing speech-language pathologist for more than thirty years. She worked with children of all ages and ability levels in schools, hospitals, private practices and university facilities. She presented at hundreds of conferences and seminars in the United States and Canada. She founded, and for fifteen years was president of, Innovative Concepts Inc., a continuing education company. Pam was founder and co-chair of the Oral Motor Institute, and for five years she served on the advisory board of the Library of Speech-Language Pathology.
