In this podcourse, Amy Graham shares tips and strategies that speech-language pathologists can use when completing oral-facial examinations. Amy discusses the importance of giving an oral-facial exam and how it can help us identify or rule out structural and/or functional impairments than may contribute to speech errors. She also describes what to look for, strategies for successful administration, and how to analyze the results.
Objective

By the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify three reasons why an oral mech exam is a helpful assessment tool.
  2. Identify three strategies to use when giving a thorough oral mech exam.
  3. Describe three key things to look for in an oral mech exam.

About Marisha: Marisha earned her Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Washington. She has worked as a school-based SLP and shares therapy ideas and resources on her blog (SLP Now). Marisha also developed a membership for SLPs that includes digital tools and resources to streamline evidence-based therapy.

About Amy: Amy Graham, MS, CCC-SLP has been a speech-language pathologist for 20 years and is the owner of Graham Speech Therapy, a private practice in Colorado Springs specializing in speech sound disorders.  She is listed on the Apraxia Kids Directory of SLPs with expertise in Apraxia and is PROMPT trained. She has worked in a variety of settings, from numerous public/charter schools, acute care/rehabilitation hospitals, an audiology clinic, and now private practice. Amy is committed to raising awareness about Childhood Apraxia of Speech and supporting and equipping SLPs to provide evidence-based therapy through her social media accounts on Instagram and Facebook.
