Implementing Adaptive Equipment for Dysphagia Management in SNFs

This course focuses on increasing the SLPs knowledge base to implement adaptive equipment used for dysphagia management in a skilled nursing facility setting. Participants will learn about state-specific and federal regulations for adaptive equipment management and be able to cite current evidence-based practice supporting the use of adaptive equipment for dysphagia treatment. Additionally course attendees will be able to identify systems for effectively implementing adaptive equipment and how to use the following: Flexi-Cut Cup, Maroon Spoon, Wedge Cup, MIT-E Spoon, Provale Cup and Sip-Tip Cup.


Following the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define adaptive equipment and identify process of selection and utilization for dysphagia management
  2. Summarize state and federal regulations for adaptive equipment in skilled nursing facilities
  3. Demonstrate how to use specific adaptive equipment for dysphagia treatment: nosey cup, maroon spoon, wedge cup, MIT-E spoon and sip-tip cup
  4. Describe current evidence-based practice supporting adaptive equipment use for dysphagia management
  5. List 3 strategies for successful implementation and staff training of adaptive equipment in a skilled nursing facility
About Megan: Megan Ordway, MA, CCC-SLP, is an SLP with 10 years of experience ranging from acute care in a large trauma center, inpatient rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities, with experience performing MBS and FEES. She has authored courses related to mixed consistency dysphagia, as well as adaptive equipment in the past.

About Mandi: Mandi Wilhelm, MA, CCC-SLP has 10 years of experience in adult settings including hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, with experience performing MBS and developing courses for a prestigious regional stroke conference, as well as mixed consistency dysphagia and adaptive equipment in the management of dysphagia.

About Sara: Sara Bouchard, MA, CCC-SLP has 16 years of experience in skilled nursing facilities and home health, and has trained staff regarding interdisciplinary care, as well as well as screening procedures, is trained in FEES and authored courses on mixed consistency dysphagia and adaptive equipment in the management of dysphagia.

Course Timeline:

15 minutes : Introduction, disclosures and need for adaptive equipment
20 minutes: Federal regulations and state regulations, evidence-based practice
45 minutes: Adaptive equipment uses, evidence, and examples/case studies for Provale Cup, Felxi-Cut Cup, Wedge Cup, Sip-tip Cup, Maroon Spoon and MIT-E spoon
10 minutes: Implementation of recommendations, links and references
