Counseling Parents: Teaching Effective Parenting Skills

The purpose of this 6 hour course is to teach parents effective and practical methods of discipline to use in their home with their children. Clinicians will learn skills to use with their own clients as well as information on how to counsel parents and teach them the skills as well. The importance of positive communication patterns will be discussed. Parents will be given hands on instruction on how to develop a good and nurturing relationship with their children.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify six skills for responding empathically to children’s negative feelings
  • List 3 effective tools to handle temper tantrums 
  • Name ten techniques that help engage children’s cooperation
  • List six skills adults can use to avoid punishment and deliver discipline effectively
  • Identify when to use praise appropriately to motivate and improve children’s self- image
About Adina: Adina Soclof is the Director of Parent Outreach for A+ Learning and Development Centers facilitating "How to Talk so Kids will Listen and Listen so Kids will Talk" workshops. Adina is the founder of a division of A+ Learning and Development Centers. You can reach her and check out her website at

Adina, received her master’s degree from Hunter College in New York in Communication Sciences. Adina worked as a Speech Pathologist in preschools for the developmentally disabled in the New York area before staying home full time with her family.

Adina reentered the workforce as a Parent Educator for Bellefaire Jewish Children’s Bureau facilitating “How to Talk so Kids will Listen and Listen so Kids will Talk” workshops as well as workshops based on “Siblings Without Rivalry” and “Raising a Spirited Child”. She has been featured at numerous nonprofit organizations and private schools in Cleveland. Adina developed TEAM Communication Ventures and conducts parenting, teacher and clinician workshops via telephone nationwide.
