In this course, Michelle was joined by Miss Erin Forward, MSP CF-SLP, formally of Rochester, NY, but now of Cola-Town, SC to assist in addressing the “Emotional Baggage” that often accompanies our little ones at mealtimes!  Does your family have a stressful Thanksgiving Meal? Do your patients tend to have “outbursts” during their mealtimes? Well sit back and enjoy as Michelle and Erin tackle the myth behind “oh it’s just their behaviors” and provide functional strategies for treatment when establishing a Home-Exercise Program. Objective

By the end of this PodCourse, participants will be able to identify and describe:

  1. three questions to ask when evaluating a child who has a “behavioral feeding disorder”.
  2. 3 ways to incorporate family members into treatment.
  3. Treatment of a 2 options for functional Home-Exercise Program (HEP) to assist with carry-over for treatment for “behavioral feeding disorders”.
About Erin: Erin Forward, MS CF-SLP, is a recent graduate from University of South Carolina, with a Masters in Speech Language Pathology. She completed her undergraduate degree in both Psychology and Communication Science and Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh. Her passions in the field of speech pathology lie with pediatric dysphagia, feeding, and AAC, specifically in patients with developmental disabilities. This interest came from her time working at the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh and through her feeding experiences in practicums in a variety of settings including: early-intervention, outpatient clinics, and inpatient acute care at a children’s hospital. Working with Michelle Dawson during the summer of 2017 fueled her desire to dig deeper into pediatric dysphagia specifically and to advocate for the needs of those patients who are affected by it. 

About Michelle: Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP is an accomplished lecturer and PEDs Therapist, she has written and given numerous ASHA approved CEU lectures on such topics as Infantile Spasm and Oropharyngeal Dysphagia, along with Apps and ST, and co-authored a course on Best Practices in EI.  She has also given an AOTA-approved lecture on Sensory Integration from the SLP perspective.  Michelle has delivered lectures at the SCSHA Convention and twice with the SCATP Expo.

0-10: Introductions and Backgrounds

10-20: Discuss definition and prevalence of “behavioral feeding disorders” and questions to ask during evaluation.

20-30: Discuss how to engage pt’s family during treatment sessions for a “behavioral feeding disorder”.

30-45: Discuss strategies for functional Home-Exercise Program (HEP) that incorporates family members into pt’s care.
