In this episode Michelle and Diane tackle typical development for a healthy growing mouth, as well as a compare contrasting factors in an evaluation between bottle and breast-feeding. They round out this dynamic hour with a crash course on which team member to consult with if systems are starting to go awry.

By the end of this PodCourse, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe 3 different parameters in an oral mech exam that they should assess when working with a newborn vs when assessing a 6 month old.
  2. Identify and explain 2 differences when assessing an infant on a bottle vs at breast.
  3. Identify and describe 3 professionals we could potentially refer to for collaboration/continuity of care when treating an infant/toddler.
About Diane: Diane Bahr, MS, CCC-SLP, CIMI is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist and Infant Massage Instructor, is a visionary with a mission. For almost 40 years she has treated children and adults with feeding, motor speech, and mouth function problems. While she is a Speech-Language Pathologist by training, she has also honed her skills as a feeding therapist, published author, international speaker, university instructor, and business owner. She maintains a private practice, writes articles appearing in a variety of publications, and is interviewed frequently on radio and for magazines. Diane is the author of the textbook Oral Motor Assessment and Treatment: Ages and Stages and two parent-professional books Feed Your Baby and Toddler Right: Early Eating and Drinking Skills Encourage the Best Development and Nobody Ever Told Me (or My Mother) That! Everything from Bottles and Breathing to Healthy Speech Development.

About Michelle: 
Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP is an accomplished lecturer and PEDs Therapist, she has written and given numerous ASHA approved CEU lectures on such topics as Infantile Spasm and Oropharyngeal Dysphagia, along with Apps and ST, and co-authored a course on Best Practices in EI.  She has also given an AOTA-approved lecture on Sensory Integration from the SLP perspective. Michelle has delivered lectures at the SCSHA Convention and twice with the SCATP Expo.

Course Timeline:

0-10: Introductions and Backgrounds

10-20: Discuss components of an oral mech exam for a newborn vs older infant. 

20-30: Discuss differences between a bottle feeding vs. a breast feeding exam with an infant.

30-45: Discuss professionals that we may refer to for continuity of care/diagnostic work-up when treating an infant/toddler for feeding/swallowing issues.
