This course will introduce the basics of providing services at a distance using telepractice. Practical skills, techniques, technology, and tools that a therapist can use to most efficiently and effectively use telepractice to treat patients will be discussed. This course will also discuss administrative concerns such as professional, regulatory, and technological information relative to telepractice. Since these issues are changeable and fluid, resources on how to stay up to date will be provided. Participants will observe a demonstration of service delivery to an actual clients via telepractice. Techniques for creating and utilizing both authentic and made-for-telepractice materials and tools for inclusion into a graduate CSD program will be addressed. 

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • identify 3 platforms for the delivery of services by telepractioners. 
  • identify 3 resources for service provision by telepractice.    
  • identify 3 issues and resources relative to privacy and confidentiality in telepractice.
  • identify 3 tools for inclusion of telepractice into the CSD graduate curriculum.  
  • identify 3 issues related state/province licensure.
About Bill: Bill Connors combines technology and neuroscience with current evidence to advance the treatment and recovery of acquired communication problems with a focus of delivering services at a distance.  He has presented at numerous venues internationally, has provided treatment daily via telepractice for 11 years, and collaborates with SLPs worldwide online.  A clinical instructor at the University of Pittsburgh, he also chaired its Medical Center’s SLP Rehab committee assisting on numerous aphasia-related research studies.  

He is a member of the American Telemedicine Association and serves on the telepractice committees of the PA and OH SLP associations.  He is collaborating with Bloomsburg University, PA USA to introduce telepractice into the graduate CSD curriculum.   Bill founded the Telepractice Certification Community and its website,®, in 2015 in order to provide training, information and ongoing professional and peer support for rehab specialists wanting to work with clients via telepractice.

This course is offered for 0.1 ASHA CEUs (Introductory Level, Professional Area)

5 minutes: Defining telepractice and its history;  
30 minutes: Starting and conducting a telepractice session; 
15 minutes: Discussing professional, ethical and legal issues; 
10 minutes: Session demo and Q&A.
