In this episode Michelle is joined by powerhouse SLP that is Deborah Ross-Swain, Ed.D., CCC-SLP, who is the clinical director and CEO of The Swain Center for Listening, Communicating and learning.  She is also the immediate past president of the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA).  So have you had an amazing idea, you know the kind that keeps ya up at night because it is so brilliant you can’t sleep due to your thoughts racing?  But then you come back to the almost insurmountable hurdle of how to fund that great Speech-Language Pathology idea? Well…worry no more friend!  Dr. Deb is here to share how she transformed ideas into action with the aid of a series of ASHA Grants!  She will share advice on the application process, the dynamic outcomes embodied in “200 words by 2” and “2 word combos by 2”, then wrap out this intense hour with functional advice on how to use these tools to educate your local pediatricians on the vital importance of functional language by 2 years of age!  Per the usual, it’s a fast paced but rewarding hour with Michelle and Dr. Deb!
Objective

About Michelle: Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP is an accomplished lecturer and PEDs Therapist, she has written and given numerous ASHA approved CEU lectures on such topics as Infantile Spasm and Oropharyngeal Dysphagia, along with Apps and ST, and co-authored a course on Best Practices in EI.  She has also given an AOTA-approved lecture on Sensory Integration from the SLP perspective.  Michelle has delivered lectures at the SCSHA Convention and twice with the SCATP Expo. 

About Deborah: Deborah Ross-Swain, EdD, CCC-SLP is the clinical director and CEO of The Swain Center for Listening, Communicating and learning.  She is the immediate past president of the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA) and has served on the CSHA Board of Directors for 10 years.  Dr. Swain is a former Chief of Speech-Language Pathology at the University of California, Davis Medical Center and held a clinical staff appointment to the School of Medicine.  Dr. Swain has received awards from CSHA including Fellow of the Association, Outstanding Service and Outstanding Achievement and was awarded Outstanding Alumnus in 2016 from California State University, Sacramento. Dr. Swain was honored with the Nancy McKinley Leadership award from the Council of State Association Presidents (CSAP) presented at the annual American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s annual convention in Boston, MA. She is a Distinguished Scholar and Fellow of the National Academies of Practice. Dr. Swain currently serves as chair for CSHA’s Early Intervention and International Committees.  She also served as the project coordinator for a tri-state ASHA grant which produced five videos on Interprofessional Practice and Interprofessional Education for assessment and treatment of ASD, Literacy and Early Intervention as well as SLP Scope of Practice and Audiology Scope of Practice. She was the producer of  200 by 2, and information video for physicians on communication development in 2-year-olds. Dr. Swain has served on ASHA’s Legislative Council, Advisory Committee and is currently serving on the Governmental Relations and Public Policy Board and Perspectives Editorial Review.  She is the author of numerous books and standardized test batteries:  Auditory Processing Disorders-Third Edition: Assessment, Treatment and Management; The Receptive-Expressive Social Communication Assessment-Elementary; The Auditory Phoneme Sequencing Test; The RIPA series of tests; The Listening Inventory; The Swallowing Ability and Function Test; Aphasia Rehabilitation: An Auditory and Verbal Treatment  Hierarchy and The Cognitive-Linguistic Improvement Program.  Dr. Swain is an internationally and nationally recognized speaker and author.
