In this episode Michelle is joined by none other than THE Dr. Kay Toomey, President of Toomey & Associates, Inc., Clinical Consultant to the Feeding Clinic at STAR Institute, and developer of the SOS Approach to Feeding.  In case you haven’t heard of it, the SOS Approach to Feeding, is a bottom-up, tip-toe in the water of feeding, functional centered program for assessing and treating children with feeding problems, based out of CO.  Worried about jumping two feet first into the water of feeding or dysphagia therapy, or tossing your patient into the deep in?  Then sit back and relax and let Dr. Toomey resolve your fears and offer hope for functional treatment!
Objective

By the end of this PodCourse, participants will be able to identify and describe:

  1. The prevalence of feeding disorders.
  2. The differences between picky eating vs a problem feeder.
  3. Three aspects the SOS Feeding approach.

About Michelle: Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP is an accomplished lecturer and PEDs Therapist, she has written and given numerous ASHA approved CEU lectures on such topics as Infantile Spasm and Oropharyngeal Dysphagia, along with Apps and ST, and co-authored a course on Best Practices in EI.  She has also given an AOTA-approved lecture on Sensory Integration from the SLP perspective.  Michelle has delivered lectures at the SCSHA Convention and twice with the SCATP Expo. 

About Dr. Kay: Dr. Kay A. Toomey is a Pediatric Psychologist who has worked with children who don’t eat for almost 30 years.  She has developed the SOS Approach to Feeding as a family centered program for assessing and treating children with feeding problems.  Dr. Toomey speaks nationally and internationally about her approach.  She also acts as a consultant to Gerber Products.  Dr. Toomey helped to form The Children’s Hospital – Denver’s Pediatric Oral Feeding Clinic, as well as the Rose Medical Center’s Pediatric Feeding Center.  Dr. Toomey co-chaired the Pediatric Therapy Services Department at Rose Medical Center prior to entering private practice.  Dr. Toomey acted as the Clinical Director for Toomey & Associates, Inc.’s Feeding Clinic for six years and SOS Feeding Solutions at STAR Institute for eight years. Dr. Toomey is currently the President of Toomey & Associates, Inc., and acts as a Clinical Consultant to the Feeding Clinic at STAR Institute.
