In this episode Michelle is joined by the charismatic Gregg Black, MD, of Carolina Allergy and Asthma Consultants, PA. Dr. Black, from Columbia, SC, (by way of Clemson, SC, Birmingham, AL, Whangaeri, NZ, and New Orleans, LA), shares the process by which infants, as young as 30 days, can begin safely assessing for food allergies and the best way to go about the diagnostic process.  This lecture is the perfect starting point for clinicians as they learn to recognize early s/s of potential food allergies and its affect on feeding and how to offer guidance on helping our patients reach out to an allergist.

Objective

By the end of this course, participants will be able to: 

  1. Describe the gold standard for diagnosing a food allergy.
  2. Identify and explain the best method for determining food allergen sensitization.
  3. Identify and describe the earliest age a child can begin safely assessing for food allergies and why.
About Gregg: Dr. Gregg Black, 2005 graduate of MUSC, completed his residency at University of Alabama and his Allergy Fellow at Tulane University Medical Center in 2012.  He has had several publications including a recent article “Facial Flushing with Food: The Auriculotemporal Syndrome” in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, as well as completed numerous presentations at the state and national level.  He was recently recognized by his peers for his dedication to his field, by being elected as the President of the SCAAIS Society.

About Michelle: Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP is an accomplished lecturer and PEDs Therapist, she has written and given numerous ASHA approved CEU lectures on such topics as Infantile Spasm and Oropharyngeal Dysphagia, along with Apps and ST, and co-authored a course on Best Practices in EI.  She has also given an AOTA-approved lecture on Sensory Integration from the SLP perspective.  Michelle has delivered lectures at the SCSHA Convention and twice with the SCATP Expo.
