In this episode Michelle is joined once again by the gifted Mrs. Melissa Montiel, MS CCC-SLP, (see Episode 14 “Banishing Confusion for Clefts”), from the Medical University of South Carolina and the Evelyn Tramell Institute for Voice and Swallowing.  In Melissa’s second lecture, we address both the speech component of VPI (velopharyngeal insufficiency), but also the more elusive and often misunderstood swallowing aspect of VPI.  Sit back in awe as Melissa educates colleagues about signs and symptoms that would warrant a VPI evaluation and the steps involved during the VPI eval.  If you have a patient with nasal regurgitation, then this might be perfect for you!

About Melissa: Melissa Montiel, MS CCC-SLP, is a pediatric speech pathologist at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She has a BS from Auburn University and her MS from MUSC. She has been practicing for 10 years and been an active member of the cleft/VPI team for 9 years. She sees a variety of patients, including acute care and outpatient populations. Melissa has been to El Salvador and Africa with the Global Smile Foundation to assist with cleft care in areas with limited access. Annually, she enjoys travelling to the American Cleft Palate Association meetings for up to date research and treatment practices.

About Michelle: Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP is an accomplished lecturer and PEDs Therapist, she has written and given numerous ASHA approved CEU lectures on such topics as Infantile Spasm and Oropharyngeal Dysphagia, along with Apps and ST, and co-authored a course on Best Practices in EI.  She has also given an AOTA-approved lecture on Sensory Integration from the SLP perspective.  Michelle has delivered lectures at the SCSHA Convention and twice with the SCATP Expo.
