The Nuts and Bolts of Supervision

Presenter: Ashley A. Northam, M.S. CCC-SLP 
This presentation will cover the gamut of supervision with a variety of individuals including site staff such as EA/IA, classroom based assistants, medical assistants, nursing staff, and levels of student clinicians in addition to other assistants. Best practice suggestions or a collaborative working relationship with different levels of assistants will be discussed. An overview of various state examples of the legally mandated guidelines for supervision of SLPAs, including those that are students as well as those that are licensed will be reviewed. This presentation will also cover the requirements of supervision graduate student clinicians as well as those that are in their CFY year. Time will be given for questions and scenarios.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 
  • Differentiate between the varying levels of the supervision relationship in a variety of settings.
  • Identify the legal requirements including administrative rules, regulations required for appropriate supervision at different levels and different states. 
  • List strategies to develop a positive, cooperative supervisory relationship with varying levels of professionals. 
About Ashley: Ashley Northam, MS CCC-SLP has been a practicing SLP for over 15 years, working with a wide range of individuals in terms of age and severity. She has also been the Director of the SLPA program at Chemeketa Community College for the past 10 years.  Ashley has practiced professionally in a variety of practice scenarios involving use of SLPAs, EA/IA, students. Previously, Ashley served as the Chair of the Oregon Board of Examiners for Speech Pathology and Audiology for a 6 year term. She continues to work collaboratively with the licensing board in a consultative capacity. Ashley served as the Oregon delegate to the ASHA Advisory Council for Speech- Language Pathology for over 8 years. In addition, Ashley has served and chaired on a variety of ASHA ad-hoc committees involving the development, use and practice of SLPAs including the development of the Associate Membership for SLPAs.

Course Timeline: 

30 minutes: Review of Supervision models, various state requirements and overview

30 minutes: Specific requirements and scope of practice for SLPAs. How to utilize SLPAs in a variety of settings and models

45 minutes: Building a cooperative relationship with a variety of staff including IA/EA, medical staff, nursing staff, students

30 minutes: Specific requirements for the graduate and CFY-SLP. Levels of independence and collaborative partnerships 

15 minutes: Questions and Answers
