This 2-hour video course focuses on how to strategically incorporate readers theatre into language therapy, primarily for second or third grade up to older students.

Readers theater is an all-encompassing activity and generates the best of receptive and expressive language and literacy skills.  It assists with reading and deep understanding, syntax, grammar, facial and body expressions, turn-taking, and more.

We explore the differences between a “play” and readers theatre, and learn not only how to find the right script and what type of script to look for, but use the script as a core technique for language instruction.  The book series “Reading Friends” is a favorite and is addressed.

 
Objective

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe at least five reasons why reader’s theater is a beneficial activity to do with language delayed children.
  • Explain why reader’s theatre is more effective in therapy than doing scripted plays.
  • Explain where to access and how to choose reader’s theatre scripts that are appropriate.
  • Explain the process of using reader’s theater as a therapy technique to enhance vocabulary, syntax, grammar, and expression.
  • Describe how to use Hoberman’s books to impact language and literacy skills.
About Char: Char Boshart, MA CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist, author, seminar presenter, and president and co-founder of Speech Dynamics, Inc. She graduated with her Master’s degree from Western Michigan University under the extraordinary tutelage of Dr. Charles Van Riper, the “father” of articulation therapy during the final years of his illustrious career. 
Char began her career in the public schools in the early 70’s with a caseload of over 110 children.  Since then, she has worked many years in the public schools, developed and ran her own private practice, and, for seven years was an Assistant Professor and Department Chair of the Speech Pathology and Audiology Department at Loma Linda University in southern California. Her interest in creating effective therapy techniques has evolved into the development of several practical articulation publications, videos (articulation and language), and articles.

10 minutes: What is reader’s theatre, why it’s beneficial for language delayed children, and how it compares to doing “plays”. 
15 minutes: Reader’s theatre resources; where and how to select scripts for every capability level.
35 minutes: The reader’s theatre therapy sequence; what to include.
25 minutes: Doing therapy with “Partner Poems”, etc.
35 minutes: How to use Hoberman’s books for maximum language impact; create “Reading Friends”.
