When addressing feeding and swallowing concerns with an infant, toddler, or young child who has Down Syndrome, professionals and caregivers should be aware of some common anatomical considerations that can impede their little one’s progress towards being a successful eater and drinker.  This 60 min course will explain signs and symptoms of common anatomical concerns that negatively impact this unique populations ability for PO, some of the more frequently occurring disorders/diagnoses, and when these patients should be referred to other professionals.

Objective

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • List and describe 3 anatomical/structural considerations for pts with DS 
  • List and describe 3 concomitant disorders and diagnoses for pts with DS 
  • List and describe 3 potential referrals that an SLP could make for an individual with DS
About Michelle: Michelle Dawson, MS, CCC-SLP is an accomplished lecturer and PEDs Therapist, she has written and given numerous ASHA approved CEU lectures on such topics as Infantile Spasm and Oropharyngeal Dysphagia, along with Apps and ST, and co-authored a course on Best Practices in EI.  She has also given an AOTA-approved lecture on Sensory Integration from the SLP perspective.  Michelle has delivered lectures at the SCSHA Convention and twice with the SCATP Expo.

Course Timeline: 
20 minutes: Introductions and Anatomy: Review anatomical and structural variations and discuss "Grand Canyon Theory" 
20 minutes: Concomitant Disorders: Define and explore concomitant disorders/diagnoses and how they can lead to Oropharyngeal Dysphagia
15 minutes: Referral Process: Explanation of what warrants a referral and how to proceed/make a referral 
5 minutes: Questions and Adjourn
