In this information-packed one-hour course, we'll delve into techniques and strategies we can do to turn this around. Basically, there has to be emotional buy-in (on the kids part), especially if we want them to follow-through on their speech homework. We'll cover motivational techniques, including how to do leverage strategies, how to use encouragement words rather than just praise words, and one critical component you'll always want to include in your therapy....


Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe, compare, and contrast intrinsic motivators and extrinsic motivators
  • List and briefly explain the two leverage questions that generates emotional buy-in
  • List several “Praise” words and list several “Encouragement” words to use in therapy
  • Itemize the elements that create a beneficial Reinforcement System
About Char: Char Boshart, MA CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist, author, seminar presenter, and president and co-founder of Speech Dynamics, Inc. She graduated with her Master’s degree from Western Michigan University under the extraordinary tutelage of Dr. Charles Van Riper, the “father” of articulation therapy during the final years of his illustrious career.

Char began her career in the public schools in the early 70’s with a caseload of over 110 children.  Since then, she has worked many years in the public schools, developed and ran her own private practice, and, for seven years was an Assistant Professor and Department Chair of the Speech Pathology and Audiology Department at Loma Linda University in southern California. Her interest in creating effective therapy techniques has evolved into the development of several practical articulation publications, videos (articulation and language), and articles.

Course Timeline:

15 minutes: Discuss and demonstrate intrinsic motivators and extrinsic motivators
15 minutes: Discuss and demonstrate the concept of Leverage and how to generate it via questions and video
15 minutes: Discuss and demonstrate “Praise” words and “Encouragement” words and why the latter is more effective
15 minutes: Discuss and demonstrate the qualities of a beneficial Reinforcement System
