Presenter:  Jan Ward, M.Ed., CCC-SLP
Many clinicians generally see private practice as perhaps something more glamorous than it actually is.  Types of private practice service delivery will be discussed such as contracting with facilities, contracting with school districts, working independently or starting a business with other speech-language pathologists.  Legal and financial responsibilities will be explained.  The participants will be encouraged to create personal goals for clinical experience, along with building “their tool belts” with continuing education and specialty skills to become an optimally successful clinician, equipped for the type of practice they envision for themselves.  Other resources available to equip those building a practice will be introduced.

Objective

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify basic goals needed for a successful job interview when seeking employment in private practice.
  • Define basic terminology used in operating or being employed in a private practice.
  • List personal and career growth ideas to achieve experience and knowledge necessary to pursue a career in private practice.
About Jan: Jan Ward is a proud Air Force Brat born to native Texan parents, who had opportunities to travel across the country and the Atlantic. She graduated from high school in northern California and then headed back to Texas to attend Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. After completing graduate school there in speech language pathology, she completed her ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in 1978.

Jan has worked in public schools, out-patient rehabilitation, in-patient hospital rehabilitation, long term care, home health and as part of the faculty at Stephen F. Austin State University in the Communication Science and Disorders Program. In 2007, Jan started a practice along with 2 partners who were fellow faculty members at SFASU and the practice now has 2 successful offices in Nacogdoches and Lufkin, Texas. Jan feels her unique background of geographical diversity as well as living in a rural area where the economic climate has been challenging for longer than the nation as a whole, has given her creative insight for building private practice systems.

Jan has served on the Private Practice Task Force for the Texas Speech Language Hearing Association (TSHA) and the Task Force for University Supervisors.  She has presented at the TSHA convention for the Business Institute on the topic of starting a private practice and again presented at the 2015 and 2016 Texas Speech Language Association Convention. Jan continues her joy of passionately coaching those beginning their own private practices.

She is the author of the book, Power Your Private Practice, a Kindle book, November, 2016.
