Speech-Language Pathologists provide assessment and therapy services for bilingual, Spanish-English speaking students. The majority of SLP clinicians are monolingual, English speakers. Consequently, it is imperative that all clinicians become aware of Spanish-English speech-language development, how it differs from English development, and the appropriate assessment and therapy techniques for the bilingual child. The intent of this course is to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes in SLPs serving Spanish-English speaking children and adolescents.

Alejandro Brice has been an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) member since 1984. Dr. Brice is a Professor in Communication Sciences and Disorders and ESOL at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg campus. He is a 2011 ASHA Fellow and the 2008 recipient of the ASHA Certificate of Recognition for Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs. Dr. Brice worked as a school based speech-language pathologist from 1987 to 1989 and worked in private practice from 1993-1995 in the south Florida area. Dr. Brice has concentrated his efforts on improving understanding of bilingual speech and language development to assist SLPs in providing appropriate assessment and instruction to English learners (ELs). The information from his research has assisted efforts to better assess and identify disorders and disabilities among bilingual school populations. Dr. Brice has investigated the influences of Spanish on English with regards to phonetics, phonology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics. Speech-language pathologists, general education teachers, and special education teachers are now more knowledgeable about bilingualism, language development, and language learning disabilities. His aim is to positively impact the lives of culturally and linguistically diverse children and adults through research, presentations, and service.
