In this course, the presenter shared her knowledge and expertise on creating a positive atmosphere to enrich communication for students with complex communication needs. She explains how to engineer the environment by raising expectations with your attitude, actions, and teaching strategies so students of all ages have ample opportunities to communicate throughout the day with a variety of communication partners, using speech or their AAC system. She explicitly details the importance and process of using the Prompt Hierarchy, The Expectant Pause, and Scripting to provide and personalize communication needs.

Char Boshart, MA, CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist, author, seminar presenter, and president and co-founder of Speech Dynamics, Inc. She graduated with her Master’s degree from Western Michigan University under the extraordinary tutelage of Dr. Charles Van Riper, the “father” of articulation therapy during the final years of his illustrious career. Char began her career in the public schools in the early 70’s with a caseload of over 110 children. Since then, she has worked many years in the public schools, developed and ran her own private practice, and, for seven years was an Assistant Professor and Department Chair of the Speech Pathology and Audiology Department at Loma Linda University in southern California. Her interest in creating effective therapy techniques has evolved into the development of several practical articulation publications, videos (articulation and language), and articles.

Patricia Mervine earned her BA and MA degrees in Speech/Language Pathology from Trenton State College. She has worked as a school-based SLP and assistive technology consultant in Bucks County, PA, for 25 years. Pat is the creator of the popular website, SpeakingofSpeech.com and shares her experiences and insights in her bi-monthly newsletter and blog posts. She has authored more than 15 books and CDs of therapy materials, and also wrote three children’s books about various aspects of speech/language therapy.
