This course will present current best information to help clinicians learn about typical aspects of oropharyngeal and esophageal swallowing in adults and older adults. This course is ideal for clinicians who need a refresher on typical adult swallowing, and is appropriate for SLP, OT, dietary, nursing, and other medical clinicians involved with interprofessional management of dysphagia. Information covered will include review of sensory and motor control of swallowing, timing and neurological control of swallowing, and typical variation in swallowing across the adult lifespan. Discussion will focus around the four classic stages of swallowing (oral preparation, oral transit, pharyngeal transit, and esophageal transit) through structured presentation of sensory, motor, and timing aspects associated with each stage.

Rik Lemoncello is Associate Professor in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Pacific University-Oregon. With 15 years of clinical experience, he specializes in adult, medical speech-language pathology. He has worked in acute, inpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, long-term acute care, and outpatient centers. He was trained in tracheostomy/ventilator management at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, MA. His current scholarship focuses on medical SLP, evidence-based practices, graduate student education, and cognitive rehabilitation.
